How to choose a pet sitter in Fort Collins
Handing a stranger your house key and your dog is a bigger act of trust than most hiring decisions people make all year. It deserves more than a five-star average and a cheerful profile photo.
Here's the checklist I'd use if I were the one leaving town — including the questions I'd want a client to ask me.
1. Insist on a meet-and-greet before you book
Any sitter worth hiring will meet you and your animals at your home, for free, before the first booking. It's not a formality. It's how you find out whether your dog relaxes around this person, whether they crouch down or loom, whether they ask questions or just nod.
Watch your animals more than the sitter. Dogs and cats are better judges than we are, and they aren't being polite.
2. Twelve questions worth asking
- Will you personally be the one at every visit, or could someone else cover?
- How long is a standard visit, and what happens during it?
- How many other clients are you serving on my dates?
- How and how often will you update me?
- What's your plan if my pet gets sick or injured?
- Which vet would you call, and would you go there?
- Can you give medications — pills, drops, insulin injections?
- What happens if you get sick or your car breaks down? Who's the backup?
- How will you handle my keys or codes, and what happens to them afterward?
- Have you cared for my species and my breed's temperament before?
- Can I talk to two families you've sat for?
- What would make you turn down a booking?
3. Judge the questions they ask you
A good sitter interrogates you gently: feeding amounts, not just brands. Whether the cat is allowed on the counter. Which door the dog bolts out of. What 'off' looks like for this animal specifically. Whether there's a neighbor with a spare key.
A sitter who asks nothing has decided your pet is like every other pet. That's the assumption that leads to problems.
4. Red flags
- Won't meet before the booking
- Vague about visit length or what happens during a visit
- No plan for emergencies or their own backup
- Pushes you to book instantly without hearing the details
- Uncomfortable when you ask for references
- Promises to take on far more animals a day than one person could reasonably visit
- Won't put the arrangement in writing, even informally

6. Set the arrangement down in writing
- Exact dates and times, including your return
- Number of visits per day and roughly when
- Feeding and medication instructions per animal
- Vet name, number, and an emergency clinic, plus your spending authorization
- Your contact info and a local emergency contact
- Agreed price and how you'll pay
- How keys or codes get returned
7. Prepare the house so the sitter can succeed
- Leave more food than the trip needs, in one obvious place
- Pre-portion medications if timing is tight
- Show where cleaning supplies, towels and the vacuum live
- Point out the water shutoff, breaker box and thermostat
- Mention the sprinkler schedule and trash day
- Leave a printed sheet on the counter, not just a text thread
